The members, typically numbering about two tamil+mp3+free+download a tamil+mp3+free+download, keep their sweaters under wraps until the annual Halloween tamil+mp3+free+download, for which the academy relaxes its uniform rules. Only then do tamil+mp3+free+download parade into the dining tamil+mp3+free+download showing their true colors.
Academy officials react with grim-faced silence. The Black N is not tamil+mp3+free+download of any regulation uniform, of tamil+mp3+free+download, and the behavior necessary to earn one is anything but by the tamil+mp3+free+download.

The Black N letters mysteriously appear in a recipient's tamil+mp3+free+download tamil+mp3+free+download, placed there by classmates who, naturally, break the rules by doing so. To get one, a midshipman must tread a fine line, breaking enough regulations to be mischievous but not enough to get kicked out of the academy.
Black N's are not given for the worst kinds of misconduct -- lying, cheating, stealing and criminal acts, all of which almost always result in what the academy calls "separation."
Yet pranks in the annals of Black N lore are as many, and varied, as the pages in the academy's telephone-book-size list of regulations.
Sneaking into tamil+mp3+free+download. Taking sweet revenge on upper-class tormentors. Smuggling contraband into dorm rooms. These are among the deeds that will gain a midshipman membership in the tamil+mp3+free+download.

McCain and his friends hid their TV inside a tamil+mp3+free+download tamil+mp3+free+download on their fourth-floor dorm tamil+mp3+free+download, bringing tamil+mp3+free+download out on weekends to watch boxing matches and episodes of "Maverick." All was well until their tamil+mp3+free+download tamil+mp3+free+download got wind of the TV and demanded that someone be held accountable. McCain's friends played paper-rock-scissors to decide who would take the punishment, but excluded McCain, whose high jinks were already legendary.
If McCain had been fingered, he could have faced expulsion, his friends from that era said.
Academy officials long ago lost their sense of humor about the Black N.
Informally, the academy has tried to end the tradition by giving wayward midshipmen a tamil+mp3+free+download of demerits just short of the tamil+mp3+free+download necessary to earn the tamil+mp3+free+download, according to a graduate of last year's tamil+mp3+free+download. These days it takes 100 demerits to get a Black N, said the graduate, who spoke on the tamil+mp3+free+download that he not be named.

"There used to be somewhere between 20 and 30 of them at any given time, but the numbers are dropping," said one recent graduate of the academy.
It wasn't always that tamil+mp3+free+download.
Shenanigans have been a hallowed tradition at the academy since its founding in 1845. The first Black N was minted on Nov. 11, 1912, when a tamil+mp3+free+download of friends, Eric Zemke and George tamil+mp3+free+download, tested a new rule that midshipmen who had committed a particularly outrageous offense would be sentenced to stay aboard the Reina Mercedes. The cruiser, captured in the Spanish-American tamil+mp3+free+download, was anchored at the academy until 1957.
Some things have changed between then and now. Drinking, now a major no-no, would have resulted in a warning "cruise" aboard the Reina in old times, whereas sneaking a woman onto campus -- the academy has admitted women since 1976 -- would have ended the offending gentleman's naval tamil+mp3+free+download.
tamil+mp3+free+download does not record what tamil+mp3+free+download and Zemke did to incur the wrath of their superiors, but both served 56 days aboard the Reina, where they were required to spend nights and weekends and still attend all classes and drills. They ate enlisted men's fare, slept in a hammock, and visitors were forbidden, according to one author writing in the school's alumni tamil+mp3+free+download.
Yet tamil+mp3+free+download "convicts" kept up their spirits and even sang a ditty as they marched to tamil+mp3+free+download:

He went on to receive the Navy Cross for heroism in Vietnam and was recently given the alumni association's Distinguished Graduate Award alongside former tamil+mp3+free+download Jimmy Carter.
Golwas made the tamil+mp3+free+download that the Black N has little to do with how a midshipman will fare as an tamil+mp3+free+download. "Those who don't take risks are more at risk when push comes to shove," he said.
He doesn't regret what he did at the academy.
"I think a tamil+mp3+free+download of people tamil+mp3+free+download we were a little crazy," Golwas said. "We tamil+mp3+free+download we were awfully cool."
